50% of Babri masjid funds came from Bangladesh, claims Suvendu

Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday levelled explosive allegations against Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir, claiming that more than 50 per cent of the funds collected for the construction of a Babri Mosque in Beldanga, Murshidabad, came from Bangladesh. The remarks have intensified an already heated political battle surrounding Humayun’s newly formed Janata Unnayan Party.

Addressing a gathering, Suvendu alleged that Humayun Kabir had spent seven days in Bangladesh before laying the foundation stone of the mosque on December 6 last year. He claimed that a significant portion of the money collected through online donations in state-run bank accounts originated from across the border. “Of the money he collected for the Babri Mosque, more than 50 per cent came from Bangladesh… Humayun Kabir is the bridge between Bangladesh’s Jamaat and Mamata Banerjee,” Suvendu said, calling the matter one of national security.

Humayun Kabir had earlier appealed to the public for financial contributions for the mosque’s construction, including through online platforms. During the foundation ceremony, donation boxes were placed at the venue and the money collected was counted live on video. Suvendu’s allegations specifically pertain to the online contributions.

Political tensions have escalated since Humayun announced the formation of the Janata Unnayan Party. The BJP has alleged that the Trinamool Congress is using Humayun to float a new outfit as part of a strategy, while the ruling party has countered that the BJP is backing his new venture. There has been no immediate response from Humayun Kabir regarding Suvendu’s latest claims.
